Reward Herbicide Program

The best defense to keep the weeds in Puslinch Lake under control is the Reward Program. Every year all lake front home owners are asked to participate in treating the lake with this herbicide since it has proven to be the MOST successful way to reduce the weeds. Here are some facts you should know about the product and the program.

What is Reward?

Reward herbicide is a Super-Fast acting weed killer, which works great on floating and submersed weeds, and makes a perfect rapid knockdown killer for the Eurasian Watermilfoil.

Why use Reward?

It is the best defense against the Watermilfoil that have been trying to take over the lake.  It is applied in early July each year.

Who applies the Herbicide?

Peerless Aquacare is the certified organization that has been working with the Residents in the Community to manage and apply for all necessary permits through the Ministry of the Environment (MOE).  They also purchase and apply the herbicide.

WHEN does the REWARD Program Begin and End?

The application of the Reward Herbicide is applied the first week of July. Each homeowner that participates in the program MUST submit a Consent Form by March 1st followed by payment on March 15th of each year.  Emails are sent out to remind Residents of the timing and the cost for that year.  Permits are submitted to the MOE in April before the product can be purchased and applied.  All Consent forms (with original signatures) and payments MUST be given to your PLCA area Directors by March 15th.

WHERE

Reward is applied to a four meter boat channel in front of the respective property for the Residents who participate in the Program.  Note, just because your neighbour may participate does not always mean your property will benefit. The more homes that participate, the better it is for the lake!

HOW

Once a homeowner signs up for the Reward Program a package is delivered to each home.  In that package, a flag (or marker) will need to be installed on the waterside of each dock being treated the night before.  This identifies that the treatment has been paid for and it is to be done.

A certified member of Peerless Aquacare then goes out the first week of July with an additional member and applies the treatment to the permitted areas via boat.  The product is spread widely over each area with a hose, similar to a fire hose. The Reward then lands on the plants without harming any wildlife to kill the weed.

It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that the water be as calm as possible during the treatment process. NO BOAT traffic or swimming is strongly recommended for at least 24 hours. Calm weather is also required to apply the Reward.

CAUTION BOATERS

The dredge is bringing up 20 to 40 foot, old, submerged trees on the South shore slalom course area. At times it doesn’t stay on the dredge platform & will sink to the bottom, possibly causing a boating hazard, if the boater is not paying attention.

Rain has raised the lake level somewhat to make dredge navigation better and allowing for heavier loads. This site ( South shore) has massive, good mud ridges. We are at the halfway point for this year’s dredging. After this, private dredging will take place on the southern and eastern shoreline.

The tug needed repair after taking out the back end on a rock - all better now. Approximately 400 truck loads of material have been removed to the pit.

Bottom line - 2018 had been a good year for dredging but soil sales are in a slump.

As a reminder please be aware that all boaters need to provide adequate distance between them and the dredger for safety reasons.

Also the channel between Big Island and the smaller areas is a Slow Zone! The dredger has the right of way going through the channel as it cannot maneuver out of the way.

Dredging Operations

An average round trip takes 1 1/2 -1 3/4 hours in travel, 30 minutes to load, and 1 hour to off load.           Total time per load is approximately 3 - 3 1/2 hours per load.
Close to 9000 tons has been removed this year. Hoping to hit the 20,000 ton goal, plus tonnage from future private dredging. 
The dewatering pit is filling up quickly, anticipate it to be completely full at year end.

Dredging is going well this year.  As of today, approximately 6,000 tons of material has been removed, with a target of approximately 20,000 tons for the year. 

The dredging location has changed somewhat due to lack of solid material in the central area. Our goal this year is to dig on the eastern side of the lake in the area that borders the O'Krafka's residence ( Eagle Point ) and the Chute's residence ( North/East shore ). During the days of high wind we are digging an area east of the big island, using the island as a wind break to prevent the barge & equipment from being blown into the eastern shores. Wind and lightning storms have certainly been a challenge for the team this year.

Baring any unforeseen problems, private dredging will start mid September through to mid November.  The average cost, depending on how many loads are being removed, will be $1750.00 plus HST. Financial commitments will determine who gets dredged first and in what order.  The PLCA's overall dredge plan takes precedence over private dredging. Interesting Facts About the Dredging Process

Most of the bottom of Puslinch Lake contains extremely dense clay.

The barge, when empty, draws 3 feet of water - when fully loaded, it draws ( draft ) 5 feet of water and travels 1.8 km per hour.The container, or hopper on the barge holds five rock trucks full of material ( 175 tons). The rock truck is a six wheel drive, off-road dump truck which weights 60,000 lbs when empty.  It holds approximately 30 - 40 tons of material. The rock truck takes approximately 1 hour to empty, depending on the off-loading location in the pit. There is presently in excess of 100 rock truck loads of material drying at this location.

The pit that is presently being used is reaching its maximum capacity, and is up to 8 feet in some sections. We have in excess of 1100 rock truck loads (38,500 tons) of material drying. Removal of material from the pit is one of the biggest challenges presently facing the restoration project.

Dredging on the east side of Big Island will require a new area to dispose of the material, as the barge cannot manoeuver with a full load over the shallow depths in this area.

The average cost to operate effectively per year is approximately $150,000.00
